I was asked yesterday if I could quickly whip up a logo for a new business. Sure I can, but do you really want me to?
If you were going to give a presentation at the biggest event of your life, would you just whip together an outfit, run out the door, and on the way to the event scribble down some notes for your presentation? I hope not. You most likely would want to prepare your presentation with research and find out who your audience is to make sure you pick the right words. You only have a short period of time to convey your message. I think you most likely also want to dress “properly” with something that makes you look good, gives a good impression, and shows your personality.
That also goes for your logo, which is a small yet important part of your business. It is the foundation of your marketing material and your visual brand. Although, to fully express your brand you need a lot more than a logo. Acutally, there is really no limit on how far you can go to be and present your brand. Know the smell of Abercrombie & Fitch? Can you picture what an Apple store looks like? The sounds when you walk into a spa? It’s all very well thought out to make you feel and connect.
What I want to say is: don’t just whip up a logo. Think about it. Think about your business vision, your big picture. What do you want your logo to convey? Who do you want it to attract? What experience do you want people to have when they see it? How do you want them to feel? The more you dig into your message and its meaning, the clearer your business vision will be. You will know where you want to go and who you want to go with you. Then, create a logo that shows that.
Just like if you were to speak at the biggest event of your life, you only get one outfit and one chance to say the right things. I say, dress the part, do your research and you will have great presentation, better yet, more business may come your way.
If you don’t know how to dress your part, well, you are at the right place. I would love to help you!
