It’s no secret that at KHD, we serve service providers and a lot of them are financial advisors and the like. And I tend to recommend including a section for a blog whether it be a consideration in the future. And like a lot of the people I work with, you as a financial advisor might be wondering if blogging is worth the time and effort. After all, you just want to help your clients manage their finances, not spend time writing articles. I would argue that blogging can be a powerful tool to grow your business, establish authority, and engage with potential ideal clients because it can be done with your personal tone and connect with your type of person. So, in this article we’ll explore the pros and cons of blogging for financial advisors, discuss why it could be beneficial for your website, and share some ideas on what to blog about within your industry.

Why I Recommend Financial Advisors to Blog

Blogging offers several advantages that can directly benefit your financial advisory business. Here are some key reasons why you might want to consider adding a blog to your website:

Establishing Authority and Trust

One of the main reasons to blog is to establish yourself as an expert in your field. By sharing your knowledge on various financial topics, you demonstrate your expertise and build trust with your audience. It can also be a comfort to potential clients that you are an advisor who consistently provides valuable insights and guidance on your website. They get to know you better and feel like they are walking into meeting you with some knowledge.

Improving SEO and Online Visibility

A blog can significantly enhance your website’s search engine optimization (SEO). By regularly publishing content that addresses the questions and concerns of your target audience, you increase the likelihood that your website will appear in search engine results. It also gives you content to repurpose in multitudes of different ways.

Showcasing Your Unique Perspective

You are getting into this industry because you have a unique approach to managing finances and serve very specific people. Blogging gives you a chance to showcase your perspective, values, and strategies and reach your ideal audience in a deeper and more meaningful way. This differentiation can help you stand out in a crowded market and attract clients who agree with your approach.

Pros + Cons of Blogging for Financial Advisors

All of that sounds fine and dandy, but you are like “give me me a specific list of pros and cons of starting a blog as a financial advisor:

Ideas for Blogging in the Financial Advising Industry

If you’ve decided that blogging is a good fit for your business, the next step is to brainstorm content ideas. Here are some ways to find topics that might resonate with your audience:

Listen to Your Audience: Pay attention to what your audience and clients are asking you. Chances are you have loads of content right at your fingertips and you already know that it will be consumed because people are asking you about it. I would recommend keeping a spreadsheet or document where you write these things down when they come up, and make sure you have access to it from your phone and computer.

Look Up Keywords: Applying these keywords will help build on your SEO and allow you to garner the attention of folks who may not have been in your audience already. This is one place to make sure you are remaining true to your tone while using these keywords. There are multiple tools to use for this like; Google Search Console, Google Keyword Planner, SEMRush, AnswerThePublic and WordStream. Other places you may not think to look is Quora, TikTok and Facebook Groups.

Blogging can be a powerful tool for financial advisors, whether it be to establish yourself as an authority, improve your SEO and/or engage your audience. However, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t come with challenges which is why some financial advisors opt out of blogging. Some financial advisors buy pre-made content which is kind of like throwing your money away because it is repetitive, shows up on other sites and lacks personality. At K.Haggard Design, we actually offer blogging services complete with SEO if you so desire. But if you’re willing to invest the time and effort, blogging can be a valuable addition to your marketing strategy. By choosing the topics that your audience is interested in you can use your blog to attract new clients, build trust with your audience, and showcase your expertise. Whether you’re sharing financial planning basics, market insights, or client success stories, blogging offers a flexible and cost-effective way to grow your business.
