Choosing a business name can feel like the ultimate lightbulb moment until you realize someone else may already be using it. Before you fall in love with a name, make sure it’s available. Here’s how to check in no specific order, so you don’t run into issues down the road.
Check Domain Availability
Start by searching registrars like Google Domains or Namecheap to see if the domain is available. If the .com is taken, check who owns it or if it’s actively used. Getting a domain is very difficult these days so that is why I encourage starting here.
If it’s for sale, you might be able to buy it, but don’t build your whole brand on a name you can’t fully own.
Google It
Start with a deep dive on Google. Look beyond page 1. Try different variations, see if there are any local businesses, online shops, or content creators using that name.
Check Social Handles
Use Namecheckr or just go platform-by-platform to see if the Instagram, TikTok, or LinkedIn handles are available. Consistent branding across platforms matters more than ever. It makes it a lot easier for your people to find you and to simplify marketing (and prettify too).
Search the USPTO Database
This is the official government site for trademarks. Visit USPTO.gov and use the TESS search to see if someone has already registered the name.
Look closely at similar names and the industry they’re in. If your business is in a similar category, you could run into legal issues.
Check Your State’s Business Registry
Before registering your LLC or sole proprietorship, make sure no one in your state is already using the name. Most Secretary of State websites have a searchable database.
The goal is to find a name that’s truly yours, not just for legal reasons, but so your brand has room to grow. A clear, conflict-free name sets you up to build a recognizable and protected brand. Take the extra hour to do the digging now. Your future self (and your lawyer) will thank you.
If you find yourself stuck in a hole with your naming, remember that we do naming. We take all the steps above to make sure you have a name that feels like you and is ALL yours, as well as look into your story and create a name that matches with your vision and ideal clients.
