I know, going into the backend of your WordPress website can be daunting. You worry, “what if I screw something up?” “How do I begin to make sure I am applying SEO best practices?” Editing your WordPress website doesn’t have to feel like walking on eggshells. Whether you’re updating a photo, adding a blog post, or tweaking some text, you can confidently make changes with the knowledge that you are putting the SEO front of mind. Let’s walk through a few key areas you can edit yourself and how to do it with ease.

Updating Text Content

Start small. Maybe your business hours changed, or you updated your process slightly. To make text edits:

  1. Login to WordPress.

  2. Go to Pages in the sidebar.

  3. Click the page you want to edit (e.g., “About” or “Services”).

  4. If your site uses a builder like Elementor or WPBakery, click Edit with Elementor.

  5. Find the text box, click it, and simply rewrite what you need.

  6. Click Publish in the top right when you’re done.

Pro Tip: None of the changes will hold if you don’t click Publish, so if you need to revert just exit out without saving.

Changing a Photo

Swapping out a photo is a great way to give your site a fresh feel.

  1. Navigate to the section you want to update using your builder (similar to the steps above).

  2. Click on the image and choose Replace Image or Choose Image.

  3. Upload a new photo or select one from your Media Library.

  4. Click Insert and then Publish the page.

Keep image sizes under 300KB if possible so your site speed doesn’t suffer. It helps if photos are in JPG.

Pro Tip: Save the image with the correct name for it and add an alt text description describing your image when you upload and then keywords in the caption boxes you’ll help your SEO.

Adding a Blog Post

Regular blogging helps with SEO and builds trust with your audience.

  • In the WordPress dashboard, click Posts > Add New. Or you can click Clone on an old one and edit from there.

  • Enter your blog title and featured image and category.
  • Click Edit With Elementor.
  • Enter your body content.
  • Use headings (H2, H3) for easy reading and better SEO.
  • Once you’re done, click Publish. Or if you are batching, Schedule.

Consistency is extremely important! Whatever you choose to do, stick with it—try to (at least) do bi-weekly and  build from there.

Always preview your changes before hitting publish, and back up your site regularly or if you don’t want to worry about it consider our Maintenance plan with frontend design edits. With a little practice, editing your WordPress site becomes a breeze and actually pretty fun.
